Ok the reason why its dark is because your shutter speed is to fast - try using the equvilent of you focal length which would be around 1/60 1/125. Your DoF is pretty shallow too so stop down to around 5.6.

To me the blur looks like motion rather than DoF but then again your using a fast shutter speed??!!

Your focal legnth is your lens - so if you have focused at 50mm, dont use a shutter speed any less than that _ its up to you wether you do it manually or not

ok. still having some probs w ill post again when ive got a bit better.

just took delivery of 'understanding exposure' so i will be buried in that for a while.
