You can actually get some neat portrait shots with the 55-200, but you need LOTS of space 
Tbh, I don't think there is a substitute and you may regret it if you don't wait. Can you try a different Jessops store? Personally I would wait for it because it is a cracking lens!

I'm still waiting for mine!!!!!!! it's driving me nuts! when I was getting my new Tripod on sat' I asked in the shop at st Helens (Kamera direct) an d they said they can order it for me but it will take two to three weeks!!! :o

Seem as if Nikon do a f1.4 and an f1.8 lens both 50 mm.
