50mm nikon alternative?

Hi Guys,

does anyone know of a lens that will produce results in portrait photography similar to the nikon 50mm? Jessops have no idea when they'll get them in next... I keep ringing everyday to see if they've got any. They had an order that was due in their warehouse on the 24th march, but they dont know why they never arrived.

I was looking at the Sigma 18-50mm as its a similar price... but not sure if its just worth waiting and seeing if jessops ever get the 50mm again.

Re: 50mm nikon alternative?

Are you after that particulaer focal legnth or just a good portrait lens?

A portrait lens focal range is typically between 50mm to around 135mm.. The most popular being the 50mm and the 85mm. HTH

Re: 50mm nikon alternative?

just a good portrait lens really.
my current lens is the 18-135mm kit lens i got with the d80.

is there a lens other than the 50mm 1.8 nikon that will produce better/sharper results than my current lens for less than £100?

Re: 50mm nikon alternative?

TBH Stu, no. You really get what you pay for when it omes to lenses. This is why people go nuts over the 50mm. Your getting alot for your money.

Have you tried ebay?? or even looking at Sigmas 50mm (although not as fast)

Re: 50mm nikon alternative?

I have the Tamron 90 mm macro lens which is good for portraits as well as macro. A photo mag voted it the top lens as well.

Re: 50mm nikon alternative?

Correct it is a f2.8 lens. as for a price compasison I have absolutely no idea but my thinking went along the lines of
a 1-1 macro lens
b good portrait lens

It saves on having to buy two lenses so that has to be taken into account on the price.
