Colormunkie use

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been struggling with matching the hard copy picture with that on the screen in Photoshop Elements7, no real problem using Jpeg but RAW in Elements has been a pain to get right.

So I took the plunge and purchased Colourmunkie so I thought I would share the experience, so here goes. Typical of me I couldn't wait so opened box to find and check items (included was an international power plug, why I don't know but it was loose in the box so any freebe etc). Anyway back to the Colormunkie, first thing was to take it out of its cover, then trying to find out how to fit it back in. The book that comes with it is totally useless, but it does come with a demo disc which is ok if you have a second computer to run it on whilst trying to set the Munkie up.

The Munkie won't work until its registered with you- ie name- addy -serial no -etc, but the latest versions is not restricted to just one computer. Once registration has been accepted which is only a couple of minutes you can then proceed to profiling the monitor/ printer via on screen instruction which are pretty straight foreward ( well they must be because I managed it).

Next is doing a Munkie profile printout (5 lines of 10 colour match swabs), I did struggle a bit, after the printout had dried, because of having to go over them with the Munkie at a steady speed, it took be a few goes before I got the hang of it. That profiles the monitor, it is almost the same doing the printer so I won't repeat the above apart from saying colour management control needs to be disconnected via the computer before repeating the process.

You are then asked if you want to add the new profile to the Printer colour management, What? I asked myself, oh well why not, so I went ahead not having a clue on what they are on about( this is me being impatient again).

Ah smart me! I did find the new profile in the colour management of the printer,so thought having got this far why not try it out. Yes it works, when doing the same thing it is imperitive the printer settings are correct as well as those in Elements7 or your prints will be rubbish, as I found out initially.

Ok why didn't I stick to jpeg fine? because I decided that I would have a go at shooting in RAWbecause of more control over the picture.

Oh by the way the colour match between monitor and hard copy is the best I have ever had with a RAW photo. Anyway thats my finding.

LM

It depends on how professional you want your photos and how the existing hard copies come out. The thing I do like is being able to profile your printer as you want and not how the preset settings are in colour management. The other thing is you can do a colour match on an object as well by placing the Munkie over it. As to being fiddly if I can do it so can anyone, but it is an expensive bit of kit so you definately want to give it serious thought before purchase. The are other calibraters on the market but some only do the monitor and not the printer which is why I went for the Munkie.

Having set mine up I am amazed how much better the hard copies are from RAW. I purchased the ColorMunkie Photo from the USA for £275 and incurred no import duty, thats a saving of nearly £40 on UK minimum price. Ok it took 5 days free postage to get to me but the wait was worth it.
