What makes people photogenic?

Simple question with what might be a complex answer. What makes people photogenic? Thinking of head studies in particular.

Re: What makes people photogenic?

No idea, but great question!
In my family I rarely get a good picture of my smallest boy even though he very patiently sits there and does what I ask of him. I get gorgeous images of my daughter though - even when she isn't co operating!

Azz
You jokes are worse than mine, and thats saying something

Seriously some people, no matter how much effort by the photographer, just don't seem to produce a good photo. I was wondering if its because of lack of " character " in the face.

Re: What makes people photogenic?

Some people 'sparkle' more in real life - I wonder if those people are more photogenic.

Re: What makes people photogenic?

I'm not a portrait person so I don't really feel qualified to say what makes certain people 'photogenic'.

I'm amazed by some of the 'pro' family portraits people have hanging on their walls (and I include me and my family in this) because the protographer has obviously managed to capture a fantastic 'split second' moment. The results might be fab but not because we're 'photogenic'.

At the other end of the scale - I might snap away at family gatherings and despite my many shortcomings as a photographer I do find (when I look through my images) that there are certain people who I always seem to get decent shots of.

It's nothing to do with what I (as the photographer) have done - it's just that some people are able to be themselves, act naturally, look relaxed and ultimately - be 'photogenic'.

Re: What makes people photogenic?

I think Phil has made some good points there. Personally, I dont think I am photogenic, i find it extremely difficult to relax in front of the camera and in certain situations, I think this may dampen the 'photogenic' side of me (if there is one!) I find people who are generally out going, relaxed and confident in their everyday life and most situations are normally more photogenic.

Re: What makes people photogenic?

People are photogenic when they are at ease. Folks comfortble in their own environment, theie own homes or their own areas of interest make the best subjects. As photographers we have a great deal to do with the modd of the photographed. If we're unsure of ourselves, taking too long to set up a shot on undecisive, we add tension to our subject.

Confident people are the most photogenic. They are not intimidated by a camera at all. They love life & they love people. They project themselves.
