A confession..

For a while now I've been happily snapping away with my Sony DSC-H50 "bridge" camera. I still think it's a great little camera, but lately I've become increasingly irritated by its shortcomings: bad noise in low light or with ISO > 200, a not very wide wide-angle, unwieldy controls, but more than anything the feeling that I'm missing shots because in general operation it's just not quite fast enough.

Well, to cut a long story short, a couple of days ago I crumbled and today my latest and most expensive foray into retail therapy arrived: a Canon EOS D40, with 17-55 and 70-300 zooms.

I've only taken a few throw away shots so far and haven't a clue what half the buttons and settings do, but already I'm blown away by its speed and handling of poor light / higher iso:

I'd left the camera on auto iso for that one (hadn't even found out how to change it yet!) and it chose iso 800. Now there's noise of course, but nothing compared to what the H50 would have dished out at that sensitivity.

Bloody marvelous!

Oops - so it is! I guess I nearly created the first Canon/Nikon hybrid

And yep, once I find my feet with the new kit I'll have a go with the challenges. After all this expense I guess I'd better get more serious about this photography thing!

Re: A confession..

This is the reason I and others say if you can afford a DSLR against a compact there is so much more scope to widen the photographic oppertunities even if to start with the camera is set to auto everything.

I tend to stay with the camera on aperture priority and allow the camera to do the rest, unless of course I need to crank up the shutter speed then its either manual or "S" Shutter priority.
