Comments please, on the quality of the lens, not on the shot itself?

I took this this afternoon, to see what the kit lens was like for close-up work. I forgot that I had the colour-popping filter switched to red in the Aperture priority mode, so ignore the colour...what do you think of the lens performance? Is it reasonable for a 600 quid camera? I don't know, the most expensive camera I've owned up to now was the A200...

That is a good point...this is a more conventional shot, but rather less snappy:

Or this

Again, it isn't the composition I'm concerned about, it was just a lens test V my brother's D400 Canon...

We'd need to see quite a few more tbh - and ideally fully size.

But it seems like a reasonable lens from those shots Are you unhappy with it?

Not at all. I'm actually starting to think that there must have been something fundamentally wrong with the A200, because it never had the crispness or definition of this...the pics were never as tight, never as sharp. I genuinely don't know what to expect of what is being sold as a Prosumer (shudder) camera.

I've also been keeping the many pics I've taken in the last couple of days away from here for fear of the *have a look at this! And this! And this!!* syndrome...but I have a set in Flickr where I've been trying out its capabilities http://alturl.com/6r2ji

It is also a stunningly good HD video recorder as well...

Re: Comments please, on the quality of the lens, not on the shot itself?

To do a like for like comparison several things have to be considered.

1 Use unedited photos
2 Same camera settings on both cameras
3 Same lighting conditions
4 Cameras not "tuned" to match a lens
5 Pictures taken at same distance
6 Tripod use with remote shutter to avoid shake
7 Using the same lens

Even then there is no guarantee the picture will come out the same the camera build may be different even though taking a photo with the same lens.
I have never had as good results using lenses not made by the camera manufacturer, yes they are good but you can't beat in my opinion a lens made and matched with the camera make.

Re: Comments please, on the quality of the lens, not on the shot itself?

This is one I took this morning. Not having either the A200 or the original kit lens I can't do a side-by side comparison, but looking through my old files I'm having to concede that the old girl must have had creeping decrepitude, because it looks as if there was a slow deterioration in the quality over the last couple of years...

So...I think all in all I'm happy with the actual *quality* of the kit.

All I need to do now is learn how to use it

Kit 1
Sony A57
Sony 3.5-5.6 /18-55
Sony 4.5-5.6 75-300
Tamron 4-5.6 70-300
