I like the second image - but I lifted the brightness by +50 in CS3 and it looks a whole lot better.

Nice captures Melody. I had a play as well and it looks so much better with the lighting boosted. I used the "shadows/highlights" levels, and just a small increase in brightness in elements 5. If you shot RAW it will be much easier to correct/adjust.
