Sorry Azz but I do prefer Polo's second effort, to my mind hers has more facial definition, but everyone to their own

I like the composition - I often deliberately crop the top of the head off like that so that the eyes are given prominance. The expression is also better.

I think the problem with this one is the lighting.
The light looks like it came from straight on judging by the lack of definition/shadowing in the face and the dark shadow under the chin.
The result is that there isn't much variation in shades in the face which was made more obvious by Azz's edit.
Did you use the on camera flash?
