Full Moon tonight

Captured this shot about an hour ago just before the clouds rolled in and spoiled the view. I used my Canon 5d MkII with my Skywatcher 80 ED (600mm) refractor telescope, mounted on my Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod. I also used an IR blocking filter between camera and scope.

This is a 70% crop, shot at 1/125 sec, ISO100, fixed aperture of 7.5, mirror lockup, remote controller (TC-80N3)

Canon 5D MKII
Canon 400mm f5.6 L

Re: Full Moon tonight

For me maybe a little oversharpened which is necessary quite often to get the details right unfortunately. However a nice clear shot and having had many attempts at taking similar photos of up to 1200mm I know just hard it is to get. One of the biggest problems I found was that the best times are on a cold clear night when the temperature drops, it seem to make the moon stand out more but one gets really cold making the attempt.

Re: Full Moon tonight

I don't think it's too sharp - viewing in full helps there. I think it's spot on!

I don't do oversharpened Have you viewed full size as Laura suggested? if you are viewing without clicking on the "click here to view full size bar" then these compressed images will have a jaggy look about them untill you view them full size. Although I took several shots, this image was the first one I captured.

The best time to shoot the Moon are the phases before it's full, except when the air quality/atmosphere is very steady, you will know this if stars don't appear to twinkle. Also, wait till the Moon is high in the sky and at least wait two hours after sunset. As you can see I was lucky tonight to get a very detailed, sharp full Moon which of course was mostly the result of my excellent ED optics on my telescope combined with my 5d Mkii dslr, that, and the steady air, and I almost forgot, my infra red blocking filter which also helped me get this detailed and sharp image.
