(request for DJ) LEE hard graduated neautral density (0.6) filter

This may seem like a strange request but I've enjoyed the long exposure shots posted over the last few days.

I'm keen to see the effect of the filter at different shutter speeds.

Any chance you can post a wee thread showing some examples of 'fast' sky / slower water tides - compared to without the filter ?

Failing that could you take a few shots of the sky (whole frame at different speeds) with the filter on so I can see the difference between the upper and lower ?

Re: (request for DJ) LEE hard graduated neautral density (0.6) filter

I'll try get that sorted out for you Phil Just remember that these hard grads are not so good for using on uneven horizons, ie close up mountains . they are great for seascape sunset images where you usually just have a straight line separating the sky and water. You could also angle the filter if the shot requires it too.

I'm sure these images were test shots with and without the filter at Loch Katrine, this was the first time using it.

That's interesting of me too, I wondered how distinctive the hard grad line was compared to soft. I think there is some performance difference too on DX and FX frame cameras because of the increased depth of field with DX cameras.

Re: (request for DJ) LEE hard graduated neautral density (0.6) filter

I know these are not exactly what you wanted Phil, but it was very windy and with constant changing light it did not make things easy for me. I'll get your full sky shots when the weather calms.

These first two images are taken at f4 without (left) and with the filter

1)

2)next ones at f22

3)

As you can quite clearly see, there would be no need for the filter in those images, rather use a cpl instead. Sometimes though, I could do with a 0.9 or even a few stacked, it all depends on the light differance between sky and foreground. You can also use a screw in CPL with the Lee filter system to hold back the sky even more but it's a bit fiddly.

I've also bought a B+W 6stop ND filter to allow me longer exposures in daylight. Here are a few examples of shots taken with this filter.

1)f22, 10sec, ISO100

2)f22, 2 minute exp, ISO100

Re: (request for DJ) LEE hard graduated neautral density (0.6) filter

Thanks for taking the time to show that DJ - very helpfull.

Whilst I would like one of these for flat landscapes I understand why a 'hard' line or a very dark grad isn't great for uneven horizons. Perhaps a soft or less dark grad would be good for my mountains.

Re: (request for DJ) LEE hard graduated neautral density (0.6) filter

Ohh...interesting - I have never looked at the long exposures a) becasue I do not have a tripod (yet!) and b) I tend to take action shots.

However - If I head off to Australia - I would love to have a go at some...might had have to start practising....

Did we ever have a lesson of the month about exp times?

There's an 'exposure explained' thread on the right hand side which explains using shutter speeds & aperture settings.
