Plenty of flies on me.

Well it arrived. Late in the afternoon but at least I have got it. Th new macro flash.

Typical of me, don't look at the manual, put some batteries in and it's Weeey Heeey lets take photos.

There is a lot to learn with this flash so it will have to wait until the weekend to get a proper try out but here's a couple fly by nights out on the leaves

Gonna have to get a bit more selective with the focusing as in the first one the body seems to be the sharpest part of the image whilst the head is a bit soft. Bit of practice for me this weekend

Re: Plenty of flies on me.

You've pointed out the problems in the first image, so I'll just say I like the second, but it looks a bit oversharpened to me. Lovely colours though! I really look forward to seeing what you can do with this macroflash - as it's something I'm seriously considering at some point when I have the time/money/memory to look into it!

Re: Plenty of flies on me.

Love the second one.
I was trying to photograph flies yesterday and was quite suprised at their beauty.
I found focusing difficult as they wouldn't stay still so I was thrilled if any part of them was in focus!!!

Re: Plenty of flies on me.

Nice attempts Steve. Try taking multiple shots of the same images but using different focus points - then assemble them as a single image which is clearly focused throughout.

Re: Plenty of flies on me.

A couple of nice shots there Steve. When starting out with Macro it can be hard to judge the focusing as you have a smaller DoF to play with (as you are much closer) - also the subjects you chose don't tend to stick around for long lol

What aperture did you use? Did you have it wide open?

Looking forward to seeing some of your Macro shots with this combination, I was sorely tempted by the flash you have but couldn't justify it at the time (so bought a new lens instead ).

Re: Plenty of flies on me.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

Greyhawk, I used f13 with the camera set to manual exposure. Shutter speed was 1/200 sec and I had the flash in fill in mode so it takes care of the main subject's exposure. Handheld.
