I do similar, i create a new fill/adjustment layer for HUe/Saturation and Desaturate the image using the slider. Then use the black brush to bring back the colour.

I open a picture in CS3 .......then I desaturate ...then I brush over the part of the pic I want coloured (making sure the black paint colour is selected)

I open the picture, then a new layer, colour it all in black, set to hue and erase the bits I want in colour...

Sorry don't know if anyone has said it that way yet!

I just have CS

Thats what I have elements 6 and I can't find the art history brush thingy,
am I being really dumb
I follow everything to the desaturate, and then I get stuck

As a general rule of thumb, I never work on my original background layer. I always either duplicate the background, or open up a new adjustment layer and take it from there.
