Before & After

Some of you might be interested in my post processing and how far the final image comes from the original frame. I've posted the original RAW file simply converted to a Jpeg. The original RAW file size was 50.6 Meg. The saved JPG was 32.5 Meg. The final isn't bad considering the heavy crop and shooting the original at ISO 1600. The crop was necessary due to the distance to subject. I was using just the 24-70mm today and that maxed me out at 70mm for the original.

Original, unedited RAW conversion to Jpeg

Final edited JPG

I used Photoshop CS6.1, OnOne Software's Perfect Resize & Photo Effects, Nik Software's Vivesa 2. & Topaz DeNoise Plug-ins to attain the final image.

Here's the Exif data off the JPG:

18mm Fujinon
35mm Fujinon
60mm Fujinon
18-55 Fujinon
55-200mm Fujinon

Re: Before & After

To be able to come in/crop that close and still keep the detail without the dreaded pixilation is remarkable. Ok you have used several editing suits to get that but well worth the effort.
I do wonder if a longer reach lens may have helped to reach the final photo as the records shows a 70 mm focal range?
Think I would have used a 70-300mm lens with a 1.4 tele converter to get 420mm.

Bob Can I ask with that Nikon D800 can you shoot in Tiff? and if so how many meg would that be for a picture?

With the D300 shooting in TIFF produces 35 meg roughly if I am reading it correct.

My original RAW file is 51.8 meg, the conversion, using Photoshop 6.1, straight to tiff is 108.6 meg. The file right out of the camera is also 108.6 meg. The D800 shoots in RAW, JPG, Compressed or uncompressed Tiff.

I had to grab the D800 and shoot a frame set for Tiff format out my balcony window. 108 meg is twice the size SmugMug allows to be uploaded. It's 50 meg limit has me cropping a bit to get under 50 meg if I don't crop. I have a 500 Gig hard drive on my iMac but store all the Jpegs on SmugMug.

Re: Before & After

Not bad at all considering the distance Bob I think this is why you've lost the fur detail etc, also the noise reduction doesn't help in that department. Still, not a bad shot all things being told!

The natural JPG size of the photos from the D800 is 30"x20". With OnOne's Perfect Resize I keep that ratio the same in all my compositions and post processing.
