You'll be ok, my 12-24 is 82mm thread and it is easy enough to hold.

JR is right re the Sigma except they seem to be a bit hit and miss on quality control. Seems you get a good one or a bad one, some people reporting having to change once or twice before getting a suitable one. My 12-24 seems ok though.
