Much difference between 55-200mm and 70-300mm?

Hi, I'm seriously thinking about treating myself to a new lens, as you know my love is wildlife photography and the 55-200mm lens I have just doesn't cut the mustard for long shots, on ebay I've seen a Tamron lens that will autofocus on the D40 it's a 70-300mm lens, how much more will that give me, is it going to be worth it or will I be waisting my money, are Tamron any good for lenses, thanks for your advice

If you're into nature photography then I think yes, you will notice the difference between 200 to 300 - but I don't think it will be that 'big' a difference.

Will the tamron autofocus on the D40?
Does it have VR? (Is that important to you?)

How about the Nikon 70-300vr? It's abuit £300 tho but gets pretty good reviews

Re: Much difference between 55-200mm and 70-300mm?

It's the price that's attracting me to it, it's only £99 and yes it does autofocus on the D40 or at least the info about it says it does, I'm just wondering if the extra 100mm will give me better range or will I be better saving my money for something like a 400mm lens, which I can't afford at the moment, but is it cheap for a good reason, I know that you get what you pay for, but I really want one know and I do have a birthday coming up, and Christmas is just around the corner

Here's the link to the ebay page.

Re: Much difference between 55-200mm and 70-300mm?

£99? For an extra £50-60 you could have a Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro zoom - Brand new!

I've had Tamaron lenses in the past and think Sigma are far superior.

I assume you have a tripod? You will need one firing at the long end of 300mm? Just something for you to consider within your budget.

I have to agree with JR about the Sigma lens, what you will find with the greater reach is the liabilty for more camera shake.

Thanks JR

I take it you mean this one, (link below), yes I have a tripod, but only a cheap one, you think the Sigma would be better lens, I really don't want to waste my money

Re: Much difference between 55-200mm and 70-300mm?

CLM - NO.

I mean this one http://www.jessops.com/Store/s29861/...)/details.aspx

This is the APO version, it gives far superior performance to the non-APO model due to the quality of glass used and the chromatic abboration correction built into the lens.

Look for the red ring around the end of the lens - that is the APO version.
