Great examples of long exposures - I think this could be my next thing if I could get the filter for the sky.

Moon - don't fear the tripod - it is your friend LOL and will allow you to do so much more. I think a lot of your recent stuff (style) could be 'unleashed' to it's full potential with a tripod and slower speeds.

Re: Portencross (the old pier) long exposure

I do have a fear of Tripods I have a really good Slik one, and I just can't get on with using one, just feels awkward, just more comfortable handheld, or an obliging rock

Will try some on the lake this weekend, as it is just across the road, so haven't got to lug it far, and haven't taken any on there for a while, watch me knock my camera in the lake I am so clumsy

Moon - I'm a Slik guy (ok perhaps not) but honestly a tripod is an amazing bit of kit. Trust me - chill out - slow your shutter speeds right down for top quality.

Re: Portencross (the old pier) long exposure

I shall try,but after I sent my Oly flying when I tripped on the leg of the tripod, I don't like! that is how I ended up with the slik tripod, it's a lot sturdier.

It is something I need to master, as in the mountains that I go to, there are several waterfalls, and I really want to do them justice, at the moment they are too busy, but when it is quieter , I want to at least try and get some okay pics.

Sorry DJ waffling away xxxx

Sorry to DJ too but you must get a tripod LOL - Why on earth make life difficut when you can just sit back and let slower exposures give you so much

My tripod saved me from falling over backwards but I broke one of the carbon fiber legs. I'm still using it but it's about 2inches shorter now

I'm going to get another one and use this as a spare but I won't get another carbon fibre as I feel it's just not sturdy enough, especially in anything more than a breeze blowing. I was trying to film seals down at Seamill a few weeks ago using my 400mm + 1.4 convertor and when I looked back at the footage it was shaing like a jelly fish because of a slight breeze and my manfrotto tripod not being solid enough. I do like manfrotto so will prob get a aluminum one from them, will be cheaper too

Phil is right Suzi, you need a tripod, it will change the way you take images and make you think about the shot you are about to take and let you take low light, low ISOand small aperture images you would not get using your cam handheld. I only use my camera hand held for things that move, anything else and I have it on my tripod , day or night

Re: Portencross (the old pier) long exposure

I'd be interested to know what you end up with DJ as I suspect you do a lot of walking. Clearly you need good, sturdy tripod but don't want the weight, any ideas?

You also just saved me from buying a carbon fibre tripod thanks! I always suspected the weight reduction would just mean it was like any other lightweight cheap tripod, i.e. not good enough in any breeze.
