Octoberfest

It is supposed to rain today so I took off for Mt Angel and its yearly "Oktoberfest" early. I was there two hours before they opened and two hours before the rain started.
I think the folks in Mt Angel built their entire town to look like a European town in the Bavarian Alps. They really get into it with full costumes. I only had time to photograph a few of the permanent buildings before the rain set in but I think you'll get the idea. As I was leaving all the food vendors were firing up their carts and it sure smelled. I skated in and out before having to pay the $12 entrance fee. A poor man does what he can.

Re: Octoberfest

I like the style of the buildings, It's a shame about the wheelie bins though.

Re: Octoberfest

Interesting shots Bob - kind of quirky. Love the boy and girl figures in the first - they would have made a nice subject on their own.

The wheelie bins don't really bring much to the first image but in a strange way they do work in the second. Perhaps you could have even made more of them ?

Oktoberfest is a 16- to 18-day festival held each year in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, running from late September to the first weekend in October. It is one of the most famous events in Germany and the world's largest fair, with more than 5 million people attending every year. The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations, modelled after the Munich event

Re: Octoberfest

Seems strange thing for the USA to do is to celebrate a German festival given the past history between the two countries.

Re: Octoberfest

Remember that America is a nation of immigrants from every corner of the world. They move here and bring their cultural practices with them. My parents were both born and raised in Germany. I'm a first generation German/American myself. My father, once a proud German national, served in the US Navy fighting his own people in WWII.

We celebrate everything from St Patrick's Day to Quanza, a black celebration. Blacks didn't immigrate, they were forced into slavery and used all over our Southern states to pick cotton, tobacco and a variety of crops.

America doesn't have the same kind of European history of thousands of years of ancestry. Our history only started in 1492.

Re: Octoberfest

I can't believe someone would make such a narrowminded comment to be honest!

I think it's fantastic that Oktoberfest is seen all over the world! Same as Paddy's day - it's one of the things I love about Ireland, so I love that wherever I may be in the world on 17th March, I can have a Paddy's day celebration!
