Oh Dear - Camera World

I'm in deep trouble now. My best friend introduced me to a new camera shop in downtown Portland, Oregon, Camera World. I've been looking for such a shop since my little local shop closed its doors due to our country's economic recession. Suffice it to say that because of this new shop I'm likely to get in big trouble. I walked out of there with a new Manfrotto 055XPROB Tripod($180) & Manfrotto 222 Joystick Tripod Head($105). I also have a new lens in the mail, a Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 SLD DG Macro that I got through Amazon.com for a bargain $140. Can't turn down fast, long glass for that price. The lens should be here Sept. 10th.

Re: Oh Dear - Camera World

I actually bought the tripod because of the new lens. At 300mm it would be too much for my little Manfrotto to handle. In addition the new Manfrotto has a cool feature that swings the center vertical column horizontally to allow portrait orientation in seconds without removing the camera. I need to take some photos of the rig once the sun comes up. It's 5 in the morning here, dark and raining.

I am right handed Phil so either head would work fine for me. I was pleasantly surprised at the selection they had. I had my eye on a big Gitzo tripod until he told me the $600 price tag. Nice, carbon fiber but way over my head. The sliding column that rotates vertically saved me the cost ($140) of a RightStuff custom rotation bracket for my D90. I like going from landscape to portrait quickly. I really need to force myself to carry the new gear on landscape shoots just so I can become familiar with their use and see how much of a difference a tripod makes in the quality of my work.
