Perhaps to take miners down the pit shaft? And sorry, CL, I can't see the pics at the start of the thread! I did see the one on page 2 I think it is! It is sad to see all the mines closed down now and think about all those miners who spent a lifetime down them. Happened to many of our Scottish mines as well! That's so-called progress for you! Shame. However, lots of miners lives have been saved by not working down those dreadful coal faces now.
