Make sure the battery is fully charged (often overlooked)
Plenty of memory cards
Don't take photos looking into the sun, keep sun at least over on shoulder to prevent "Flare"
Check the background, can make all the difference
Focus on the head and eyes for still shots
Sports mode or equivilant for moving birds (or video if camera able)
Keep camera steady (use support if necessary , ie post -tree trunk-fence rail)
Do ask other photographers if you want help, most will be only too willing to oblige.

A lot of photos you see have had editing (Post Processing ) done afterwards and not the original shots so be prepared to do some as well

Re: Advice on how to Photograph Birds of Prey Please

For the flying bird shots (not sure if you can with that camera, but if possible) bump up the iso to 400 - this will mean a faster shutter speed and less blur.

Canon EF 70-200 2.8 L IS USM
Canon EF 17-40mm 1:4
Kit 2
Canon 40D

Re: Advice on how to Photograph Birds of Prey Please

Thanks guys

Have just bought two packs of brand new Batteries I think I can set the iso on a couple of the settings, in fact I know I can just not sure what settings they are will have to make sure I know before I go and save the settings to the favourite setting. I don't have sports setting I do have a multi shot setting.
Really hope to get some great shots. I tried whn I was down at Muncaster castle. Hope its ok to put them here if not please just delete them - its just to give you an idea of my ability or lack of....

Re: Advice on how to Photograph Birds of Prey Please

You're not doing too badly at all - it's not easy to photo them in flight with a compact camera - so good luck - hopefully you'll come away with some nice pics and some lovely memories!
