Insurance for Camera Equipment - who do you use/how much do you pay?

I got insurance for my 40D today, £30 for a year, comprehensive, the value of the cam is £790 but if I make a claim I have to pay an excess of £250 the insurers are E&L the reason I chose them is I have all the dogs covered with them.

Anyone else have their cams insured ? can we compare prices etc,

Re: Insurance for Camera Equipment - who do you use/how much do you pay?

i have photoguard 42 per year 1000 pounds of equipment and 1 million public liability for when i do weddings.

when transporting equipment it has to be in a metal locked box.

never claimed so dont know if they ae good but have had good reports.

i only really went with them to t my public liability insurance

cause knowing my luck the mother of the bride will trip over my tripod and break her leg. ha ha

[sometimes i wish they would ha ha didnt mean that]

Re: Insurance for Camera Equipment - who do you use/how much do you pay?

I had my old dog covered with E & L and when he last got ill, he had all sorts of test done and an op, then we had to have him PTS , the bill was way over £500, they argued that the test and op were unnecesary and they didn't cover euthansia or cremation, and in total all I got back from them was £2.40 obviously that was not the most important thing to me, I'd have rather have had Tommy back, but I'll never insure with them again

I hadn't thought about getting insurance for my camera, but I think I will after I get my new lens at Christmas

I had a similar prob with them 2 years ago with one of the dogs, he needed a minor op on his ear and the bill came to £230 I payed the vet and had to wait 2 months on them stumping up, seems they move it a snails pace when it comes to claims but I thought the deal for the camera was quite good.

No - I would never use E&L. I had my horse insured with them many years ago and was really dissatisfied with them. Have never been with them since.

With regards to camera insurance, mine is currently just under the house insurance - however I am looking at taking out a separate insurance. The ones that have been recommended to me are Towergate and Photoguard. I got a quote from both and they are very similar, one had a slight disadvantage but I can't remember what it was off the top of my head (something about being insured overnight I think?)

Re: Insurance for Camera Equipment - who do you use/how much do you pay?

I've added valuable goods away from home to my home contents insurance...

I'm covered for up to £4000 away from home...

I am known to carry my camera stuff, a laptop and a digi video camera at any one time - so well worth specifying them as extras...
