Re: Darker edges

I'm not really a fan of vignetting, especially when you spend a lot of money on a lens to avoid it, then add it afterwards!

It does work on certain images, but not many.

Some new cameras actally correct for vignetting in the camera body itself (in my camera I think it's called 'Peripheral Illumination Correction') So if you want some vignetting remember to turn it off

Re: Darker edges

I personally like a bit of vignetting! Personal taste I guess!
Did you add yours an extra layer? If so, experiment with the different blending options and opacity. You can get a good range of effects that way.

Re: Darker edges

The Peripheral Illumination Correction (PIC) on the 5d mkII and the 50D only works on jpegs. If you shoot raw, the PIC can be applied if you are using DPP to process your raw images but if you use a third party raw converter (Adobe, Capture etc.) then it is not usable.

That's a great point and it's something that always makes me chuckle. Your dead right in that one can pay a fortune for lens that doesn't 'loose' light around the edges and that some cameras have the abilty to make allowances to correct it.

It's just one example of how (in this techno digital age) it almost seems like what's considered good or bad is determined by what the advanced kit can do that cheaper kit can't.

The prime example is sharpness. We get so wrapped up with megapixels and buy or at least strive to emulate the pin sharp results of more expensive lenses.

I mean - how many people soften their shots rather than sharpen them ??

Of course I accept that better kit enables better results (which is brill) but we shouldn't asume that the 'fine' results better kit can produce should therefore determine what's considered a good or bad pic/image/style.
