Re: From New Lens

I love my 17-40 as a landscape lens.

I bought it when I started using a 1D body which is between full frame and crop sensor. It's also (with a filter on the front) fine for using out in the pouring rain which is handy in these parts.

Canon 1D Mark 3

Re: From New Lens

A good lens is worth its weight in gold. Although I still have a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 lens and a Tamron 90mm macro lens I am not over keen on 3rd party lenses . My all time favourite "and some reviews rubbish it" is my Nikon 24-120 mm lens, it stays on the camera most of the time. Don't know if its an ultra sharp copy but it suits me.

Ok having got that out of the way, your pictures. To be honest I can't see much wrong with them. Maybe with the fountain shots instead of just taken as is, possibly having a person sitting on an edge say reading a paper or with a pushchair may give a bit more interest. But thats just my wild thinking.

AS Phil says a filter will also help protect the lens such as a skylight filter which is just plain glass or a UV filter for bright sunlight to cut out the UV rays. Far better to get a filter scratched than an expensive lens.

I was just meaning that with the right camera body - the 17-40 is a lens that can be used in all weathers as (unlike some) it's weather sealed however a filter needs to be attached to the front element to complete the weather seal.

I find it can be a little soft at f4 but stopped down it's very sharp. I only use it at smallish apertures for landscapes so it's not really an issue.

Softness in the corners I've noticed (more at f4) but shouldn't be too much of an issue on a 7D as the smaller sensor is only going to be capturing the image through the centre of the lens.
