Schiehallion

Don't take this one too seriously as it's just me being bored and mucking about over processing some shots that didn't really come out that well from the weekend.

Schiehallion (Fairy Hill of the Caledonians) isn't the biggest hill in the area at 3,547 feet but it's a pointy hill that stands alone and is a familiar landmark from other peaks accross the highlands.

The hill has a claim to fame too. A memorial at Braes of Foss commemorates when in 1774 the 'Astronomer Royal' Maskelyne became the first person to measure the mass of the earth. He did this by observing the deflection of a pendulum by the mass of Schiehallion and as part of the experiment the volume of Schiehallion had to be calculated, for which purpose contour lines were invented by Charles Hutton.

Re: Schiehallion

The fact that it is a hill on its own Phil makes it a good target to try and capture again, especially when its all covered in snow.

Re: Schiehallion

Thanks folks

Owen - yes thats cloud below me down in the valley. A bit earlier (before it broke up) I was between a complete cover of lower cloud and higher cloud - if that makes sense.

Re: Schiehallion

Ah yes, very nice. Was going to walk it, but had to rush back as my mother died. That was a lot of years ago now. I really must return to Perthshire.
