Re: Early Morning Flowers

Nice shots

Sorry - can't help ID the other two.

PS

When did you take the sunflower shot ?

My kids planted sunflowers earlier this year. Most have flowered and finished, some are fully open just now and a few have been slower and are at the same stage as the one in your shot.

Despite the sudden warmer weather we could get frosts at anytime so I'm hoping it's not too late for them to fully flower as it's the biggest ones that are left.

Re: Early Morning Flowers

Thanks Phil......

I would say the sunflower was planted at the end of June, maybe as late as beginning of July. Although i had not a clue as to what had been planted as this Sunflower came out of a box of Shake and Rake flower seeds, each box is said to have 35 different species of flowers if i remember correctly and i raked in 2 half boxes of Yellows and Reds. upto now we have had a few Poppies and this one Sunflower and Nasturtium but also other color plants that i do not usually see in the garden. Whether the Sunflower fully blooms remains to be seen as like you say it will not be long before the frost is here.....An ideal time to plant is Spring i think for the Sunflowers. Never really grown them before but had been planning on doing so next Spring.
I had the same problem planting my sweetcorn late, i went mad this year and started growing my own fruit and veg. The sweetcorn was planted end of June also and was going well all through the summer although have found out all too quickly that they need to germinate before the summer months as they prefer the best temperatures of the summer months. They did not germinate until about 3 weeks ago so very doubtful it will yield a crop this year, we would need several more weeks of hot weather.

Re: Early Morning Flowers

We live and learn I guess.

I'm Ok with the greenhouse but need to get more clued up with my timings for outdoor planting.

Fingers crossed for your corn - it's a long shot but hopefully 'down there' you might just get lucky if the weather holds out.

Re: Early Morning Flowers

Im not holding my breath this year on the corn, lol. Luckily most of what i planted was winter veg so should yield a decent size crop to see us through a few weeks

Timings always differ depending what part of the country you live, does not help with our seasons all over the place, crops either being ready too early or failing due to seedlings popping up too late. I think most of it is down to trial and error, the seed packets tell you one thing and books tell you another for when it is a perfect time to plant certain veg......
