Just a Coal Tit

They're my 'bogey' bird so I was quite pleased with this one given the harsh sunlight.

Re: Just a Coal Tit

Very nice shot. Captured a good pose, great Dof and really good detail. I assume you used the 100-400mm lens and do you use a remote release? I've just got the Sigma 120-400mm and would appreciate some tips on shots like this.

Re: Just a Coal Tit

Great shot Phil, really like the bird stance and the clarity of the shot. How far away were you and what focal length?

Hi Paul - Yes this was taken using the 100-400 lens. I don't really bother with a remote release for shooting birds - I don't use my tripod or monopod either as I miss too much - shutter speeds are normally fast enough providing I rest the camera on a beanbag.

As for general tips - I have a couple of benches where I sit to take the pics placed so that the sun is always coming over my shoulder or from behind me when I face the bird feeders. Twigs and bushes around the feeders act as perches and the birds will normally land on these before moving to the feeders. I normally find that everything flys away when i go and sit down but after 10 mins or so they start to come back providing I keep still.

For 'still' birds just perched on branches - I tend to shoot in AV mode. On a normal day I tend to just start with 400mm / f5.6 / ISO 400. That will give me shutter speed of 'whatever' so I just check that it's fast enough to cancel out the birds movement. If the light is poor and the resulting shutter speed is too slow then all I can really do is increase the ISO as f5.6 is a wide as I can go. If the light is really bright then I might go to f6.3, 7.1, 8.0, 9.0, 10.0 etc for a bit more dof as it increases the chances of getting a moving bird in focus. I use AI Servo mode, focus on the birds eye then just keep the shutter button half way down to maintain focus till the bird looks the right way then click.

I'm pretty new to bird photography - it's just something I got into when I was unable to get out and about shooting landscapes. I'd say just get out and give it a go and see how you get on.

Re: Just a Coal Tit

You are so very talented Phil I envy your bird photography. This photo just reminded me of looking out my balcony window yesterday. We reached over 60 F for the first time this year and the tree I was looking at had its first green buds on the end of every branch. I should have gotten out my camera and taken a few shot of them. Thanks for sharing your little neighbors.
