Cut Down

This was my first time trying the Sigma 10-20mm lens, i had to use the 400D as it doesn't fit the 5D... i borrowed the lens to see how I get on with a wide angle lens as i am after the 17-40mm for the 5D.

This picture was taken at 10mm which works out to be 16mm if it was on the 5D. It was 3 exposures merged together as the sun was just out of shot to the top left and was casting harsh shaddows and over exposing other places in the image.

I wanted to practice with it before i go to Aviemore on Monday.

I think you are getting the hang of the 10/20 very well sam. You will probably realise now that you can get right up close and dirty with your subject matter!

the angles makes these good images - my only real technical question - did you include the vignetting or did that come out of the camera?

Thanks both, the lens is taking some getting used to, these are my first 2 shots with this lens. I added the vignetting after although there was a little bit there naturally from the lens anyway.

I have an idea of shots i want to take from Aviemore, just hope i get good enough weather to get them If i get on well enough with it then i will probably go ahead and get the 17-40mm lens and start doing more landscapes etc i just don't have the right gear to do landscapes at the moment and this lens is going back to my friend on my return from scotland.

Which is why I asked Sam. Ultra wide angle lens do tend to suffer from vignetting - but thats not a problem to sort in PS.

this is how they faired following the comparative testing:

Canon EF-S 10-22 = 90%
Canon EF 16-35 = 90%
Canon EF 16-40 = 84% (Impressive zoom range but edge sharpness could be better, noticeable colour fringing around high-contrast edges)
Sigma 10-20 = 81% - PhotoPlus Best value Buy (often overexposed during tests)
Sigma 12-24 = 70%
Sigma 20 = 66%
Tonika 11-16 = 93% Best on Test (Spectacular image quality, consistent f2.8 max ap)
Tonika 12-24 = 69%

** My personal experience of owning/using Sigma 10-20's in both canon & Nikon fit, is that the Nikon fit renders far sharper images. The canon fit ones you need to test the lens on your camera.

I like em Sam! Go on spoil yourself and get the 17-40mm

Thanks for the info JR, i am just reading some reviews. I am very tempted by the 17-40mm but its a lot of money to make a decision if i don't do well with landscapes etc.

If you don't like the 17-40 you could always give it to me !

I was tempted by a 10-20 but I'm not going to buy any more lenses that I can't use on a full frame dslr.

I very nearly bought the Canon L 17-40mm a few months back but didn't because I don't want to buy any quality lenses until I've decided if I'm going for a FF Canon or a FF Nikon
