Thistle

While shooting mountains & waterfalls today I still take time to look down at my feet. You'd be surprised at the interesting things you find there.

It's actually the field behind the thistle. I believe I shot this at F/4 so bokeh produces the blurred background. Thanks for your comments.

Re: Thistle

i meant how the natural light is coming from behind the thistle and illuminating the sides of it from behind. rather than from the front. it can be tricky to expose for if you don't realize it's back lighting, sometimes the front can be underexposed or the sides can be overexposed.

This is why I shoot in RAW. There's 256 times more data to adjust for the perfect exposure. Nik Software's Vivesa 2 permits pinpoint adjustments without the need for layers or masks.

I was actually walking back to the car through a bit of a field when I spotted these growing wild. I've never seen anything like them so I was intrigued by their geometric shape as well as the intricacy of their barbs. The Nikkor 24-70 F/2.8 lens that I had on the camera has a reputation for being ultra sharp, while providing great nokeh wide open. I chose F/4 because in the full frame version there were 5-6 thistles and an entire field photographed. This is very heavily cropped. Again, I processed it showing just one thistle to see how far I could do so, and retain sharp detail. I was stunned by the quality of detail that resulted from this torture test of equipment. I'm tough in this way so that when I learn how far I can push the limit of the camera I can make future decisions based on experience. Thanks for looking and for your comments. They are appreciated.

Re: Thistle

For interest Bob, could we see the uncropped image to see how far cropped it is?
