Re: Avenger Tiger...

Out of interest to any car nuts

My late father had a Hillman Hunter GT of which only 800 were made so they could be rallied. In those days the criterea was cars had to be on sale to the general public before they could be rallied, and the sale number to the public was 800 units minimum. When my father passed away I then inherited the car which had a 1725cc engine with twin solex carbs fitted. The Sunbeam Rapier produced around the same time had the same 1725cc engine but with twin stromberg carbs and was a wee bit quicker.
Oh how I remember trying to balance those carbs, a real pig even with the right gear. I never did get it spot on. The slightest wear on the needle in either carb or a slighty weaker diaphram in either threw the readings right out the window. That was after using the vacuum gauge between the carbs to balance them. As I said a real pig to get right. A lot of garages wouldn't do it and cars like this had really to go to a specialist in multi carb work

The Hillman Avenger if my memory serves me correctly was produced as the Hunter production line finished and was the replacement.

Re: Avenger Tiger...

Bazza, I remember the Hunter well. Was slightly before my time being a bit younger than you (!) but Dad had a GL (single carb) and i later got a GLS with the Holbay tuned twin weber 40's! Had the colortune kit and some ignition tuning sparkrite thingy... The head gaskets were a bit of a pig. There was also the Humber Sceptre 'luxury' model! Vinyl roof, walnut dash, inertia reel belts! I think there was some overlap with the Avenger. The Holbay GLS model was pretty quick, not as quick though as the dolomite Sprint that came out around 73/74...always wanted one, never got it though...a few weeks ago I did get to sit in one again!
