While I dream of having the 7D (or even the 5D), realisitically its not going to happen anytime soon.
But, the price tag of the 550D is more possible.
Has anyone heard anything more about it since it was launched?
Hubby has even suggested we go along and try one out at the camera shop this weekend!!!

How does it compare to the 50D which is in the same price bracket?

The 50d doesnt have movies Azz, maybe she wants those? The 550D looks a decent bit of kit Em.

50D is certainly on my mind, in fact I think it might be my preferred choice over the 550D.
At the end of the day the 550D is an entry level DSLR - the best canon entry level, but still entry level, while the 50D is in the 'prosumer' range so it is a more robust camera.
I'm not sure the spec is going to be different enough between them to help make a decision so it might well come down to the movies.
I want something that will take good portraits and the movie while it would be a great bonus, it would not crucial to me. Hubby however is very keen on the movie (he is an inline aggressive skater and wants to make skate vids with it!!) and as he is paying that needs to be a consideration.
As we can't stretch to the 7D, 550D might be the best alternative to suit him and me.

I've never used the 550 but I did see somebody with one at Loch of the Lowes on Thursday.

Spec wise - it's right up there but (as you say) it's an entry level model and it looked so small.

Unless the movies are a must I would certainly hold out for a xx model over a xxx as they're so much more robust.

So are the xxx ones smaller and lighter? because that is a plus for me as I am rather weedy with camera shake issues!

Yes the 20,30,40, 50D range are much bigger and heavier than the 300,350,400,450,500,550 models.

Specs may well overlap due to the time of release but the big difference is the build quality.

The complete review (something like 29 pages long) on that website is very interesting.
The 550d sounds like it might do me fine. Then one day I can take the next step to full format.
