Do you have any experience with Maine Coon's? We want a new cat friend for Daisy, and our vet has recommended the breed, I have been doing a bit of research and know that Hip Dysplasia and Cardiomyopathy can be a problem, so a good breeder would screen for these. Also FIV.

I have never bought a cat from a breeder, they have either adopted me,or we have a rescue. So any advice of what to be aware of would be great xxx

The vet suggested the breed because of the size and sturdiness ,their temperament, they enjoy being part of a family, tend to get on well with other pets. The only concern is Mack's prey drive, but he has always been good with our pets inc. the hamster, and when we have visited people. It seems to be things outside of a house enviroment. I would be very careful, and not take any risks, and even now if we go out the dogs and cat are seperated, through gates and doors.

Sorry for going Off topic, x x

Maine Coons are nice, but if you want a docile breed look at the Ragdoll. They are really placid in general, similar coat type to the Maine Coon. Never heard of a cat with HD, so Id be cautious of that, Im not sure they X ray Cats for it do they? definitely vaccinate against FIV, and screen annually for Cardiomyopathy.
