Mono with splashes of colour?

Ok guy and gals, id like your help...

Ive seen some awesome shots on here and looking around the web, that consist of a black and white photo with certain aspects "coloured in".

I can guess that there is software involved, what i would like to know is what software do you use, and whats is the process, as the shots can be very striking.

Re: Mono with splashes of colour?

It's a technique called 'Popping'. You can pop in most photo software, the commonest being Photoshop or Elements.

To pop you need a basic understanding of 'layers'. Put simply you open the image you want to pop, duplicate the layer so you have two images the same. You then adjust one to mono, and then all you do is remove the areas of mono so the coloured underlayer comes through.

Like I said - this is just one simple way to pop. You can do it other ways through image masking, selective colouring, etc....

Try this easy to follow tutorial.

Here is an example of a lantern I coloured popped last year.

Re: Mono with splashes of colour?

An easy way to do it if you have photoshop is to create a hue and saturation layer from adjustment layers pallete. This will give you a hue and sat layer with a layer mask attached to it, drop the slider to for saturation to -100 and the pic will go mono. Then select the layer mask and use the paint brush and black/white colours on the pic. When you use black this will show the colour through and it you make a mistake change the brush colour to white and this will change it back to mono.

Here is one I prepared earlier!

Also for a different effect, only lower the sat a little to make the part of the pic you want the focus to be on:
