Help! B/W CONVERSIONS

Could anyone give me some tips on b/w conversions?

I desaturate first then mess about with contrast curves ect.

Am I missing something?

How do you do yours?

Thanks in advance.

I'm assuming you are using photoshop CS3?

I do the same as you - but also add noise and use the unsharp mask to give me that rougher look that B&W allows. Sometimes I will use a coloured filter too - they can transform a normal picture into something more spectacular. Curves is a good tool to lift the flatness from a B&W picture to make it more 'edgey'.

In true Blue Peter style...here is one I prepared earlier.
