Canon fit macro lens - help buying

Been looking at reviews on the internet and it's starting to hurt my head.

Being newish to all this I have never owned a macro lens. It would be nice if I could start taking pictures of small insects with a lens that gives good detail.

I have a Canon 550D and £350 to spend on a lens. What would you recommend?

Re: Canon fit macro lens - help buying

Ive used Sigma 100 and 150mm macro lenses, both were good, with my preference going too the 100mm. Both are above your budget new but secondhand could be an option.

Re: Canon fit macro lens - help buying

Hi Dave, I have the Canon EF100, f2.8 Macro. I has served me well and is incredibly sharp even wide open. I did a comparison to my EF85, f1.2 with both lenses stopped down to f4 and I could not tell the difference between them sharpness wise.
Kit 1

Canon EF70-200L f/2.8 IS
Canon EF100L macro f/2.8 IS
Canon EF85L f/1.2 mkII

Re: Canon fit macro lens - help buying

Just got myself the Canon 100mm f2.8 macro lens and just finished reading a book on macro photography. The general feel is to have a macro lens from about 100mm to 150mm. The thinking is to get the magnification and some distance between the lens and subject to get better lighting and also if your shooting creatures not to be too close to frighten them off. The book is :- Close-Up Macro Photography by Adrian Davies ISBN 978-0-240-81212-0. Got it from the local library.

Thank you Paul. I never knew getting into photography would cost so much

LOL or hysterical laughter!!! Difficult to justify the cost sometimes but you learn to live with it! Still the library book was free!!

Have fun
