Canon SX30is - first impressions

NOISY.....not greatly impressed with my first Canon and I'm judging it by comparison to the P7000 not the D300 DSLR. I bought it hoping for acceptable results beyond the 200mm range of P7000 (ie. Birds/wildlife).Some of my shots between 200 -840mm max zoom are just O.K. but at the extreme end I would have to use a tripod to get anything really useable. Almost all the shots showed noise to some degree. Conditions: Late afternoon sun, harsh shadows.

Crop

The other side of the Tarn, guessing about 250yds.

Maybe 150yds distant.

All images processed in CS5, levels, noise, shadow/highlights and sharpen.

Re: Canon SX30is - first impressions

I'm no expert, but I can see visible noise and loss of detail. I agree with Dawn, if you're not happy, take it back and get something you'll like more

Re: Canon SX30is - first impressions

I can't see much in the way of visible noise :/ Not on these resized shots anyway. Still, interesting to see some shots from it.

Re: Canon SX30is - first impressions

Early days to be thinking about changing it. I really need to master a good technique to keep the noise to a minimum. Thanks for all comments.

Re: Canon SX30is - first impressions

Range will always be at the compromise of quality tbh. You gotta weigh up what you want out of the camera
