for attn - Dejavu

Hi, Deja - would you mind terribly do a comparative review on the differences you have found between your 40d and 50d? Does the 50 live up to your expectations? etc...

many thanks in anticipation.

Be quite interesting to see what DJ has to say.

For the record - The December edition of 'What Digital Camera' has dedicated 8 pages to the 50D. Whilst it's a full review of the 50D, the whole thing is very much written as how it compares to the 40D.

Hi Jack. To be honest the 50d was the last camera I thought I would buy after seeing the sample images on dpreview, of course, they were from a pre-production model but even so the sample images they provided I thought were dire. When it was finally realeased, more sample images appeared on the internet from users that looked much better than dpreview's images. As well as seeing really nice quality images from users, everyone was raving about the new hi-res screen and the micro af adjustment as well as other features, thats when I decided to buy it

I would not swap it back for a 40d I love the hi-res screen too much and the metering seems better than the 40d, it had a tendency to under expose. I can also see a quality in my 50d images that I could not see in the 40d but that is mainly with my 400mm prime. I'd say image quality using my other lenses (17-40mm & 70-200) is the same as 40d.

Another thing, you will need expensive glass to get the best out of this camera, as the reviews will also tell you.

If you don't have L glass and/or primes, or don't intend to buy them, I would say get the 40d, it's a great cam with excellent image quality

dpr say high ISO is worse on this camera compared to 40d, I've used up to 1600 and I would say it's just the same.

50d main updates
AF adjustment +- 20 steps and can memorise up to 20 lenses

Hi-res monitor 920,000 dots, compared to 40d 230,000 dots

Digic 4

Mini HDMI out

15million pixels

Auto ISO is much improved as well ,compared to 40d. 100-1600 The 40d was supposed to be 100-800 but would never go below 400.

The only negative so far is when applying noise reduction in DPP, it softens images even with a small ammount of NR.
Kit 1
Canon 5D MKII
Canon 400mm f5.6 L
Canon 70-200mm f4.0 L
Canon 17-40mm f4.0 L
Kit 2
Canon 50d

Re: for attn - Dejavu

Ahhh. thank you, that's really useful. I too have read some mixed reviews about the quailty and crispness of the images - comparative reports suggest the Nikon D300 and the D700 have it beat hands down.

I hate all this camara buying malarky.... Grrrrrrrrr

Thanks again.
