Yes it will be fine.
It's Nikon mount and is a Sigma DC lens designed for cropped sensor camera's like the D40X. Sigma DG lenses on the other hand are designed for full frame.

Phil is right, although worth considering DG lenses will work on a DX worth considering if you later plan to upgrade your kit. More importantly with your D40x is to ensure you buy lenses that have inbuilt motors for autofocus. One question on the auction suggests this is the case with this lens.
This lens isn't necessarily the best although you may get it at a good price. Personally I think I'd be more tempted to buy either the excellent performing Nikon 55-200mm VR to compliment your 18-55 or a Nikon 18-200mm VR, both of which have excellent reputations.

Jols I use the Nikon version of that same lens and paid $800 for it. I owned a D40X and know that sigma will work just fine. The price is certainly right. Thats a bit misleading though Bob. The Nikon 18-200mm is a completely different lens and considered to be a very able performer, hence my recommendation in my post above. The Sigma 18-200 is a completely different lens by a different manufacturer sharing only the focal length as a similarity. The lens in question is an auction, and it might be a keen price now but these things rocket up, particularly in the last few seconds if there is much interest. You don't find many bargains on Ebay!

I only wished to give Jols a basic comparison in price, not to compare the Nikon to the Sigma. That's why I looked up the Sigma online price and left a link on the Sigma review.
