Re: Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX

Is there anyone local to you who can help? I would if I was, but I'm not! Ask around any other photography mates Definitely do NOT blow on it- you could get tiny drops of saliva on the sensor - and make it 1000 times worse!!! I feel your pain with money issues, I was in the same position (and worse) myself a few years ago - it's no fun, but it is character building!

And birdwatching is not cheap! :P it involves traveling all over the place and expensive scopes (I still envy people their €4,000 worth of Swarovski scope!). And you'd only end up wanting to get into photography that way in the end!

Re: Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX

It is expensive to acquire all the stuff, but once you have it then at least you can press the button 'for free'. Cannot imagine going out and taking maybe only 36 all day on a role of film and then having to pay for film processing. it did make you more disciplined though with picture taking.

Hayley you have a good level camera and lens, so you can use that as a basis for your photography with excellent DX format quality. However some people find the 17-55 a little restrictive in focal length, and also you can ask yourself if that lens is worth it to you or not? For example it's value is around £500-550 secondhand (ish). You could sell that and but maybe get a Sigma 18-50 f2.8, or Tamron 17-50 f2.8, plus either a wide angle e.g. Tamron 10-20mm, or a macro Nikon 60mm f2.8, or maybe a telephoto Nikon 55-200mm VR or a 70-300m (non-VR). The image qulity of some of the latter lenses may not be quite to the standard of the Nikon 17-55, but you would hardly notice and your kit would be more versatile. Just thought i would give you some options, if you are on a budget, and most of us are in our own way. Just some ideas for getting some extra value out of your lucky break with that camera.
