Tell me which compact camera to get

I'm looking to get a replacement compact camera to replace our very old Canon IXUS 2MP.

My starter for 10 is the Canon IXUS 80 IS (£115 ish)

Just wondered if anybody has any other suggestions for about £90 - £120

It's for general use - nothing specific although anti shake and good video clips would be good.
Kit 1

Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Kit 2

thats a small budget to be fair.. but you will already know that. I have had, and highly rate Fuji Finepix compacts.

Re: Tell me which compact camera to get

I bought the Canon Ixus 90IS for Trudi a couple of weeks ago and must admit I am quite impressed. The 80 is a very similar specs and I would imagine could just as good.

But I am guessing.

My Sister (Fudgeley) bought the 80IS for my niece and (having had a play) I was very impressed with it. Having owned IXUS compacts in the past I'm just about sold on it but figured I'd see if anybody had any other thoughts.

Re: Tell me which compact camera to get

I have nothing but praise for my Nikon P80 but it is over the budget, may be you should speak to Father Christmas as if you see something you want to snap it is best to have enough scope to get the shot you want.

Also have a Pentax Optio which has a cracking lens but is a bit limited in both the zoom and pixel department but the shots you can get are pin sharp.

Re: Tell me which compact camera to get

I have had several Canon compacts and they always come out top or high in the reviews. I've learnt with a compact it has to be pocketable otherwise you don't take it so I think the Ixus range is good. I loved my SD50, now have the 950IS which produces very good images and excellent video but it seems a bit prone to red eye even with reduction. I like an optical viewfinder so that would limit my choice and wouldn't want to be buying expensive XD cards or anything non-standard. Some of the better Fujis are well rated but I have an A900 at work and that looks good but is plasticky. Nikons always seem to be slow on focussing and flash recharge in reviews so that would worry me for parties. I think you will get good images off anything in good light, it will be some of times when you push it a bit more maybe pics will look strained. A friend spent £60 on an Aldi 'Traveller' camera. Alloy body, big screen, spare battery, memory card, I said it would be a load of tat. I ate my words when I saw the pictures. Taken in good lighting the pictures looked as good as anything else I had seen from ay compact. Don't know what the flash performance is like. My niece has a pink 6MP Samsung. A brand I wouldn't touch, but the pictures she has taken at parties and outside all seem well exposed and sharp at 6x4. I think the Ixus would be fine.

Re: Tell me which compact camera to get

When I shop for a camera I shop for the features I want first. Examples include a mega-pixel range, at least a 5x optical zoom, anti-shake, good video resolution, good fit in my big hands with great ergonomic layout with regard to the controls. Other decisions would include throw away batteries or rechargeable lithium ion cell, the format used to save the photos, can it save in RAW.

In the end I've good with the Coolpix Nikon series, having owned the L1, L12 & now the S550. By the wide array of recommendations replying to this thread brand isn't as big a factor these days. Buy what works for you.
