A good portrait-macro lens for the D40
hi guys does anybody have any good ideas for a prime lens that will work with the D40! It's going to be a good 12 months before I can think about a body upgrade, the misses wont have any of that so soon after buying my first DSLR lol! I found one AF-S prime but it seems a little pricey! at £525.99 it's the 105 mm - f/2.8 G ED-IF AF-S VR - Nikon F. Does anybody else have any other ideas! thanks everybody.

50mm and 85mm are great portrait lens however they are not AF-S so won't autofocus on the d40.
Your 55-200 would produce some nice blurry portrait shots too, if you zoom right in to 200 and step back on taking the shot... give it a try?

Thats what I do at the moment, but after looking at shots taken with the prime lenes out there they just don't look as sharp! will the Nikon af primes work on the D40 body! I know thw auto focus wont work, but apart from that will the lenes work.

will the 50mm/F1.8 D AF Nikkor work with my D40 body.

As far as I know yes, but you'll have to focus manually. I would email Nikon - it might get them to release a poxy AF-s version too! I want one as well

I have the 'nifty fifty' and its great for portraits.
You do have to manual focus though and that was a bit frustrating at first, but after a couple of days it was fine.
