Japan's economy in record plunge = good for us?

Good news for the rest of us? Will equipment finally start to drop in price!?

Quote:
Japan's economy has seen its worst ever quarterly performance, with GDP shrinking 4% in the first three months of 2009.

The contraction is the fourth in succession, following a 3.8% drop in October to December. Roland Buerk reports from Tokyo.

Re: Japan's economy in record plunge = good for us?

As the guy said Japan relies heavily on exports so perhaps the prices may drop.

Hittachi and Sony get a mention so I'd suspect the photographic brands would fall under the same umbrella.

I really do hope so - Summer is practically here and I was hoping to have got a new camera by now

Plus no real signs of the D400 or D700x I was hoping to see!

Either that or they cut production costs (quality) and keep the prices the same.

I hope that's not the case - if they cut quality they will lose their status as quality manufacturers, which will hurt their brand loyalty, losing them more than any cut in margin.

As long as they drop the price of Nikon prime long lenses I'll be a very happy bunny!

It would be nice if the prices did drop! Mind you, I don't use the lenses I have enough so I should really hold off buying more for now

Re: Japan's economy in record plunge = good for us?

I'm lost??? - it would work in exactly the opposite way to which you would like to see it work. The Japs wont reduce their prices - commodities and resources still have a finite value - instead they will do as they have been doing of late - they have adjusted prices UPWARDS to re-coup losses against a volatile international monetary mechanism. I think if this is 'new' news...then you can expect prices to rise yet again.

Re: Japan's economy in record plunge = good for us?

Not really, if the Yen loses value it will get back in line to what it was (remb the prices went up because the Yen was so strong).

So with the value of the yen out the way... if a company is not selling as much as before, they would need to provide an incentive to get people to buy again... and upping your prices is not going to do that (in fact that'd have the opposite effect ).
