300mm lenses :)

although i still plan to get the 500mm lens (either 50 or 150 -), For now, I'm planning on a 300mm with a converter (maybe) I am aware of the problems with converters, but I love birdwatching and that extra reach would be for recording purposes rather than quality photographs! I'd like a bit of advice really I'm thinking of this lens:

http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/33580/a...-6-3-macr.html

and I *think* I should still be able to get autofocus if i used a kenko pro 3000 1.4 x teleconverter? but as i say, that's not really important anyway! but it's useful to know so i don't go and buy one! lol

erm... so any thoughts on this lens? or any thoughts on what lenses may be better for around the same price? or even a bit more I'm probably going lens shopping in the next day or so, so quicker replies would be helpful but all replies lapped up of course! ;D

Re: 300mm lenses :)

I would say wait and get the 50-500mm, I think you would be dissapointed in the 28-300. I believe there is a Tokina or Tamron equivalant of the Sigma 50-500mm that you might want to consider as well, just google for some review

Re: 300mm lenses :)

why do you think i'd be disappointed? I thought it may have been useful for situations where I couldn't use a big lens like the sigma? will definitely google the tamron and tokina 500s thanks for that!

Re: 300mm lenses :)

I would go to pbase.com and find pics taken with that lens Zoundz - from what I heard it is a bit soft :-/

Sigma do a great 70-200 f2.8 tho (Dawn and Bazza both got one each recently).

Re: 300mm lenses :)

thanks for that, a few of the pics looked excellent - but maybe that was the camera used to an extent? I just don't know! hmmm... I do specifically want a 300mm lens rather than a 200 ( I do have a tamron 200 - not a fab lens at all - and for me the reach is just that little bit short), but i really am at a loss as to what to get - this seemed the best option I could find in Ireland (pixmania seems about the best). any thoughts really appreciated. Will be going to shops on wednesday to look at lenses, but I don't think they'll have anything quite right there :/

Re: 300mm lenses :)

i have found a nikkor one for sale in a shop in cork which may be an option - but does anyone know this lens? is it any good? is it worth the extra money? (looks like it may be) but that does mean no 500mm for a good long while after that - so maybe I should do as DJ suggested and just hang out for that?

Re: 300mm lenses :)

The 70-300 vr is considered a very good lens for the money I wish I got that instead of my 55-200 now as the extra reach would come in handy

It's about £300 here. I'd stay away from pixmania too!

Re: 300mm lenses :)

gah! Why is everything so expensive?! I usspect it's th VAT - which you have to pay in Ireland or your warranty is void. it's infuriating - so I always have to spend that extra bit on kit. :/ For example, my D80 with two lenses and a couple of other bits was 999 euro. which is a lot.
