"This is my Habitat" Competition

Hi everyone at Yo Photographer!

Azz, the forum administrator, has kindly given me the go ahead to tell you about Habitat’s new competition that I thought you, as a photography enthusiast, might be interested in entering. It’s called ‘this is my Habitat’, and we’re inviting the UK to take their cameras and show us what they think makes a house a home.

All you need to do to enter is upload a photograph of yourself in a room which best represents your sense of style and eye for interiors - accompanied by a short explanation of what makes that space so special.

Helena Christensen, who fronts Habitat’s ‘this is my Habitat’ campaign, will choose the overall winner with a panel of judges. The public will vote for their favourite home via the campaign website www.thisismyhabitat.co.uk before Helena and the panel of judges vote.

The competition page is live here - http://www.thisismyhabitat.net/en/competition. We really look forward to seeing the entries. Best of luck, and please do let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Katie, on behalf of Habitat

Re: "This is my Habitat" Competition

What a great competition idea - I'm not sure my habitat is ever fit for any competition (or even public viewing!) but I would like to enter!

Oooh... just noticed, like most competitions... it's UK only is it? would it stretch to ROI?

Re: "This is my Habitat" Competition

Erm don't want to put a damper on the competition because some enjoy entering them.

So I would just like to make a small observation. It looks to me as though Habitat are going to gain ideas for future use via the photos sent in, which is far cheaper than hiring a design team. From habitats point of view offering a small financial prize, plus a couple of addons like the hotel bookings and a photoshoot is an extremely cheap way of getting ideas. They are also offering to furnish the photoshoot to your specifications, again a very cheap way of picking someone else's ideas.
A £100 gift card to spend in their own store to them cost nothing in reality, 2 nights in a top London hotel? cost say £200+ and the photoshoot and video they would be doing anyway. So when you break down what they are actually offering, which they can claim back as advertise expenses, they are getting the photographers services for virtually nothing.
I also notice they don't mention anything about copywrite or making an offer on any picture they may use in the future.

The offer to maybe be in their next advert would come up against the actors union Equity, so again this is questionable.

As I said in the beginning I am NOT against anyone entering this competition, but what I do object to is the way they get ideas for virtually nothing and saving a fortune in the process

Having been involved in professional location shoots, in the past, I know just how much it can costs to hire an actor- pay their agents-pay for makeup artist-pay for clothing hire-set director- lighting-props- feeding-location etc etc. All this they can avoid if Equity allow the use of a member of the public. Believe me when I say it can run into £ thousands.

Now if they offered photographic vouchers say for £5000 or more to the winner I would even have a go myself. Remember they are gaining the use of your equipment/expertise/time for nothing.
