I open the pic in photoshop and then save it as *My Pic-Normal* ...then (still with the same pic open) I go to IMAGE - ADJUSTMENTS- EXPOSURE and alter the exposure from the centre (0) to +1 and save as *My Pic-Light* ..then still on the same pic, repeat the last steps but this time alter the exposure to -1 and save as *My Pic-Dark* (Obviously you would put the title of your pic and NOT ...My Pic lol)

Then you need an HDR programme that will combine all three and tonemap ...K and I use Photomatix but there are others like Artizan

Then fiddle with everything until you get the result you want

Yes they do, I also prefer the background though - the bottom one detracts slightly from the main focus where as the top one blends in
