Yes Jays are members of the crow family. They are approx the same size as a Jackdaw.

This is what the Royal society for the Protection of birds write about them

"Although they are the most colourful members of the crow family, jays are actually quite difficult to see. They are shy woodland birds, rarely moving far from cover. The screaming call usually lets you know a jay is about and it is usually given when a bird is on the move, so watch for a bird flying between the trees with its distinctive flash of white on the rump. Jays are famous for their acorn feeding habits and in the autumn you may see them burying acorns for retrieving later in the winter."

Other members and Allies - Carrion Crow, Chough, Hooded Crow, Jackdaw, Magpie, Raven & Rook.

They are Beautiful compared with their cousins though

You blokes are so easily impressed with a swish of colour, that's why the cosmetics industry keeps going.

I think there is a lot to be said for Jackdaws and the like. I once watched one pick up an entire apple and fly off with it. It took it a while to get the dynamics right and it sort of 'kebabed' it with it's beak ....it was quite a sight.
