Off to the Hop

I recently met up with an old school friend and had literally just a couple of minutes to shoot a few pictures for him and his fantastic car. he has been into the '50's stuff since we were at school and he has made a life and business out of the whole thing... the car is his. It would be good to meet up with him again at some point and shoot a session.

These are just a couple from those shot, with a bit of PP to add to the mood... whaddya think?

C&C away, who cares?!

(Originals are sharp, Photobucket seems to have softened them slightly again so ignore that)

Re: Off to the Hop

Well - you've caught the car really well, in both - lovely light and reflection. In the second though, the two little 'antennae' sticking up in the reflection on the bonnet are distracting, and I'm not sure about the downward view or the crop.I think I'd prefer to see his legs. On the whole then, I prefer the first image. However, the problem for me with the first image is the 'pose' your friend is throwing, I love your more candid shots, they make me go all gooey with delight - but this just feels a bit contrived for you. The first one is still a super shot, but it just doesn't feel as good as your others to me.
Hope you don't mind me C&Cing like that, but I know you usually value it

(oooh... I will say though, I *love* the background and the subject matter, and it's very very revisitable! I do hope you get to do another shoot with him!)

Re: Off to the Hop

Loving the car, it's gorgeous and I would of loved to have seen it in colour. I know you were going for a vintage, cheesy posing against my car shot, but I'm personally not keen on sepia tint, to make someone look retro, I might of gone the other way , and really hiked the colour up in a fifties way, that's just personal taste though.

They are both well taken, and I prefer the second shot, so opposite to Laura I think partly because his face stands out more in the second, and isn't so lost in the tones of the sepia tint of the first. x x

Re: Off to the Hop

I actually agree with you about the face standing out in the second Suzi I totally get what you're thinking about colour too - I might have gone for a more fifties, bubblegum pop colour kind of thing - but then, I'm female, and we do have a very different take on colours etc sometimes!

I think maybe seeing how they'd look in vivid colours (but not necessarily bright - more pastely maybe) could be interesting

Re: Off to the Hop

Thanks for the comments. I've learn't through this forum and others that really you can't please all the people all the time. I don't mean that in a nasty way, simply that everyone has different tastes and not everyone agrees that often.

My friend sort of lives the part. The best way to describe this is a bit like 'the Fonz', and then you can imagine him throwing himself next to the car in a sort of cool slouch. I couldn't really have him just standing next to it. My favourite is number two. I prefer the angle. I'll take on board the comments and have a think, but to be honest, I like them as they are. However, I promised him I would process them in colour too. Incidentally, there wasn't a massive scope in the limited time to try too much. The car is parked in small area between a load of modern stuff, trailers etc.

Thanks for the comments.

Re: Off to the Hop

Post processing is totally personal taste, doesn't diminish the fact that they are great images though x

Re: Off to the Hop

Hi BC, What a wonderful classic American car.

I think where static car shoots are concerned, location and light are key, but I think you have done a good job over all. The only thing I think I would have done would be to use a CP filter to control some of the reflection better.

A nice old diner some where would have been the ideal location, but finding an ideal location for a static car shoot can involve some serious scouting.
