Working with RAW images

I've never ever used the RAW setting on my camera but it's something i'd like to do.

Anyway - after having a fiddle around on my PC I've a few questions.

I tend to use Photoshop for adjusting & editing but I can't open RAW images created on Nikon D50 (*.NEF) in Photoshop.

What I do have is Nikon Picture Project. I can open the image using this but then what?

I also have Raw Image Converter 2 which came with my Canon IXUS but that seems to 'want' Canon RAW Image (*.CRW or *.TIF) files.

So what do I do if I want the benefits of RAW ?

If I open them in Nikon Picture Project i'm limited to what i do with them. Also If I just then save them from Picture Project as Jpeg - aren't I just back to square 1 ?

Re: Working with RAW images

The biggest benefit of shooting in RAW is that you get ALL of the info from when the pic was taken, with jpeg you dont.

I use phototoshop and can open Canon Raw pics ...(.TIF aren't just Canon files )

Is there a photoshop plug in possibly?

Re: Working with RAW images

but what do I do?

My camera produces NEF files when shooting in RAW which Photoshop wont open and there's not much I can do with them in Nikon Picture Project other than crop, sharpen and save as jpeg.

Re: Working with RAW images

Did you install photoshop after installing Nikon PP?

I have Photoshop CS2 (already installed) and when I installed Nikon PP it installed the NEF plug-in for photoshop automatically.

Think you could be on to something here Azz. I've dug out my Nikon box and I have the CD for Nikon Capture 4.2 'trial'

From memory - I don't think I ever bothered installing it as it was a trial.

Found some blurb on the web that said pretty much what you said - If installed 'after' Photoshop that it will add a 'NEF' thinymabob to my photoshop.

Would this 'add on' then stick with photoshop after the Nikon Capture 'trial' ends ?

Re: Working with RAW images

Yippee

No evidence of the re-install of Nikon PP adding anything to photoshop but photoshop will now open my *.NEF files.

On opening it gives me a picklist of white balance choices but once open I can't see anything that i couldn't do with a Jpeg file.
