siskins - what went wrong?

these all came out the same - now, bleaching the skies etc badly isn't usually something I do... so i'm mystified as to what went wrong. These were all taken on a pretty grim day - and all at 400-500mm.

the worst thing is that they look kind of smudgy - like they have no detail - just made of blocks of colour - cant really explain what i mean but the beaks show it best i think.

any thoughts? tips? suggestions?

Re: siskins - what went wrong?

1/200 on the end of 500mm will never work! You need a much faster shutter speed than that even if you crank the iso up

Re: siskins - what went wrong?

What focal length were you shooting at and were you shooting hand held? It looks like the speed may have contributed to your problem.

Re: siskins - what went wrong?

Had a little play with your first photo as a try look see now deleted. Can I suggest you also have a play with turning the photo into black/white. At least that way the white won't appear to be blown. Just a thought.
