Re: black headed gulls

Laura.. I am going to sound silly, but I know nothing about birds, why are they called black headed gulls?

I can't really give you a C&C as I am hopeless at wildlife shots, but I prefer the second one, it's sharper and the colours are great, the composition is better too IMO.

Re: black headed gulls

I think these are 'pleasing' pictures, but I would perhaps not remember them very well once 'i'd clicked off the page. I think what would change that, is if you captured the character or ('jizz') of the bird. When photographing birds try and capture the bird doing something, i.e. preening, eating, displaying, landing, taking off, etc... it really does add to the picture.

I'm a very keen ornithologist, so look forward to your future bird pictures.

Re: black headed gulls

i do agree that would add much more punch to the photos As it happens, I was trying to catch them *doing* something - that thing that black headed gulls especially seem to do - dipping low in the water, head down bum up, surfing along cawing at each other I love it when they do that! Sadly the only pics that came out quality wise, didn't show this too well :/ I may have a few more though - and I will keep trying!

The second bird looks sort of... thoughtful and wistful! I like that - but it's not exactly capturing his character - as they generally aren't thoughtful and sweet... just screechy! hehe!
